5 Natural Products to Simplify Your Home

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

When I first began making the switch to more natural products, I did a lot of research and experimenting to find products that would work for us. Now, after almost 4 years, I have a few products that have multiple uses in our home. I love this because it simplifies things so much and we save a lot of money with the use of these products. If you are new on the journey to a healthier lifestyle or attempting to reduce the toxins in your home, these are 5 products that are easily accessible and affordable that could drastically change the way you live.

Coconut oil

  1. Personal Care – it is a great make-up remover or you can mix it with moisturizer to add some extra oomph when applying to drier areas of your skin.
  2. Cooking/Baking – it can replace most oils in recipes and it is very versatile as it can tolerate high heat. It also tastes great in coffee!
  3. Dental Health – you can find it in some toothpastes, make your own and/or use it for oil pulling. I use a coconut oil toothpaste and like it. I have yet to work up the courage to try oil pulling though.
  4. Diaper cream – if your baby develops a diaper rash, just coat the area in coconut oil. My babies have not struggled too much with this, but when they do this usually does the trick. If I need a little more potency, I mix a little baking soda with it.

Vinegar

We buy vinegar in bulk at our house as we use it so often… can you buy stock in vinegar??

  1. Cleaning – vinegar mixed with water is great for cleaning windows or mirrors. It leaves them with a streak-free shine. You can also use it to clean your microwave, descale your coffee pot, and unclog your shower heads.
  2. Produce wash – soaking your fruits and vegetables in a mix of vinegar and water is great for cleaning. This also may help increase their shelf-life before spoiling as it removes any bacteria that might be present.
  3. First Aid for burns –  vinegar can help pull the heat from a burn (this has come in handy as I am a tad clumsy in the kitchen).
  4. Personal Care – rinsing your hair with vinegar can help with clean your scalp of build-up, seal the cuticles, and help with any dandruff. I love using this to refresh my hair every so often…my hair is so clean and shiny afterwards.

Baking Soda

  1. Cleaning – it works wonders in the toilet and can also be used to scrub soap scum out of the bath/shower. I like to add a few drops of essential oils and vinegar to increase its potency.
  2. Deodorizing – you can sprinkle this on the carpet or your mattresses and let sit for several minutes before vacuuming to deodorize. This was so helpful for us following a bout of the stomach flu in our house a few months ago.
  3. Laundry – baking soda works great as a laundry brightener and deodorizer. I love to add it to our towels wash routine to refresh them.
  4. Soothe insect bites – You can make a paste with water to soothe irritated skin. My son has a terrible reaction to mosquito bites so this comes in handy.
  5. Heartburn Relief – You can mix baking soda with water and ingest to soothe heartburn. Anyone else get heartburn during pregnancy? It is the worst!

Essential Oils

  1. Aromatically – diffusing essential oils can provide a nice scent instead of using a candle. I think diffusing certain oils help us with allergies, relaxation, and mood.
  2. Topically – essential oils can be used for so many things. We use them daily to provide relaxation, relief of pain, calm a cough, and/or even to balance hormones.
  3. Orally – some essential oils have been approved for ingestion. My husband and I occasionally ingest essential oils in capsules to help us fight off an illness.
    1. Note: not all essential oils are created equal and not all are safe for ingestion. Please do your research before using essential oils.

Castile Soap

  1. Body wash – using castile soap straight from the bar or bottle is a great natural alternative. I love using this in the shower. They have so many great scents and I feel good knowing that this soap is all natural.
  2. Hand soap – mix castile soap with water, a small amount of coconut oil and the essential oils of your choice to make your own.
  3. All-purpose cleaner – mix a little castile soap with warm water and you have an easy DIY all-purpose cleaner.
  4. Dish soap – add castile soap to your dish water instead of your normal dish soap. You can feel good knowing that if any soap residue is left on your dishes, it is non-toxic.

This list contains only a fraction of the uses for these products in your home. There are so many more that I am still exploring. I currently use these products every week and I feel so much better knowing that my kids are not exposed to all the toxic chemicals found in many household products.

I hope you have found this post helpful. Are there any natural products that you use that you love or can’t live without? I would love to know. Send me a message or leave a comment below.

When it come to VINEGAR, what is the difference if it has the “MOTHER”?

    • Danielle September 9, 2019 at 9:20 PM Reply

From what I understand, the mother of vinegar has many health benefits if you are ingesting it. However, for cleaning purposes, I do not think it is necessary.

Many great ideas in your blog! I lost a dog to cancer, and write a similar blog, but related to keeping our pets healthy. Many people don’t realize just how many chemicals are in the products we clean our homes and selves with, and how harmful exposure to them is. As you mentioned, it DOES save a ton of money to make many of the products yourself and they won’t make you sick! Thank you!

Thank you! I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I have just recently realized how important it is to consider what we are exposing our pets to as well. We have a 14 year old dog that I have started to use more natural products and even essential oils on. Thank you for the comment!

Dr. Bronners is my favorite soap, too! Where do you get your essential oils?

    • Danielle November 10, 2020 at 3:32 PM Reply

      Yes, it is so good!
I get my essential oils from Young Living. Do you use essential oils? Let me know if you have any questions.
      Thank you for the comment.

I use coconut to moisturize my hair. Ever since the quarantine, I have applied it to my split ends and braided my hair to protect my ends and now they are shiny and healthy. I also use vinegar with water to clean my produce.

I use vinegar for so many things around the house. I love mixing it with water to clean my floors. I also have started using a few Dr. Bronner’s products after receiving some for free at a conference I attended. I’m enjoying them! This list is simple and accessible, making it easy for us utilize!

Great list of ingredients. I would add shea butter and beeswax – great for use when making personal care products!

I’ve never heard of Castile Soap. I definitely going to check it out. I love using “normal” household products for so many more things. Thanks for these great ideas.

I use baking soda for cleaning a lot. I’m wondering how you add it to the laundry for towels – how much, do you just sprinkle it on top of your clothes, or put it where the fabric softener would go?
I like using baking soda for cleaning the kitchen sink (brightens a dull sink. sprinkle and let it sit, and scrub away). I also mix it with water to make a paste to clean the oven, but you really do have to scrub and let it sit and get it all off.
